Thirty years ago, the earliest spelling checkers available were heralded as an innovative way to improve everyone’s ability to write. Later, these checkers were enhanced with the ability to identify rudimentary punctuation and simple grammatical errors. But they did not improve an individual’s skill at crafting human ideas into English vernacular! And neither does AI:
1. AI is a tool. It will not make you a better writer of ideas. AI is the generative accretion of the way a large number of people have expressed patterns of English thinking the past. AI does not think; it is not capable of originality or innovation.
2. AI does a great job of fixing grammatical, spelling, punctuation, simple typing errors, and the misuse of common phrases, expressions, and vernacular.
3. AI does not improve a writer’s ability to formulate abstract ideas, concepts, and philosophies that other people understand using the English language.
Evaluation is the making of a judgment about the amount, quality, or value of something. It is an assessment that can be wholly subjective and qualitative or entirely objective and quantitative. Usually the results of an assessment fall somewhere in between. Rarely does the result represent a totally rational judgment. Before you can fix something, you need to know what is wrong with it.
